Contentious tax

Karen Eckstein is one of the country’s few Chartered Institute of Tax (CIOT) qualified litigation solicitors.

Karen is a member of CIOT Standards Committee, a council member of the Association of Tax Technicians (ATT), and a member of a number of working parties, providing guidance on amongst others, engagement letters, professional conduct in relation to taxation and expenses. Karen’s unique specialism and experience makes her the obvious choice to advise accountants, solicitors and the tax professional on risk and contentious tax issues. She advises and lectures regularly on topical issues facing the professions.

Karen has experience of the whole range of contentious tax issues, from assisting in enquiries, investigations, disclosures, penalty negotiations, through to “old style” Special Commissioners hearings and is uniquely placed to act in hearings in the new tax courts and in tax litigation generally.

Risk Management

We regularly advise solicitors, accountants and tax advisers on risk management, in relation to tax, and in relation to professional negligence generally. We are frequently instructed to work alongside tax professionals when dealing with HMRC and tax matters, to support the professional and ensure the best possible result for their clients.

Karen was the only solicitor on the cross professional body working party advising on draft guidance and engagement letters for the tax profession. The guidance, which was adopted by a significant number of professional bodies, was published in August 2008 and Karen is now frequently asked to lecture on this topic, and is also often instructed to advise professional firms on their own engagement letters and procedures.

Commercial Litigation

Commercial and contractual arrangements do not always run as smoothly as intended by the parties involved. Where problems do arise, a business will normally want to limit any disruption and loss to their operations whilst minimising the management time and cost of protecting its interests. As specialists in dispute resolution and risk management, we can provide your business with the relevant legal advice and identify practical strategies to bring contentious issues to swift and cost effective conclusion.

We have the experience to understand your commercial aims together with the professional expertise to handle matters whenever legal action is contemplated, threatened or commenced. We are a niche practice and can provide an experienced yet approachable team with a flexibility of working and fee arrangements to enable your business to continue to make use of its resources where they can be most productive.
